“We do it because it is hard.”
These words come into my mind when my time at MUN was arriving at an end.
At MUN, or Model United Nations, people from all over China representing countries came and met. We furiously debated over assigned topics, stressing cooperation, yet defending national interest.
I remember at MUN, the swash of thought rushing through my veins, through my head, through my mind, and through my heart as I stood up and defended the rights of my nation.
I remember the will and power seeping through my teammate’s eyes as we countered criticism, opposition, and rivalries with passionate speeches.
I remember the support and shared sense of duty of my allies as we created our pact.
I remember the all-nighters writing important papers, the communication and coordination, the thirst for more speaking as time strikes nil.
The frustration of opposition, the delight of new people joining our ranks, the arguments and the debates.
The brick-like will, unwilling to crack, for our allies to pass down a resolution of what we believe is right.
And so much more.
This is Model United Nations.
With a request of our student president, I was asked to write my experience in Mock United Nations(MUN), I was please to accept his request, since my time at MUN to me was a incredible event that I will not forget.
It was a very forgettable 4 days I had been in MUN, and I will tell you it was a truly unique and special experience to me, it was a very short four days, since time pass fast when having fun. I was really unwilling when I had to leave. My new friend Jasmina, asked me to sign her player card. We were partners in MUN. Both representing the country Norway, I recall meeting her on the first day when we arrived, she was a small figure, polite, and very quiet, she was in middle school but was pretty mature for her age, I asked her a few questions and she answer with a few words and we were silent. But before we left, I managed to ask her name. I also met on that day a lot of other wonderful people, Ryan and Nancy representing UK, Leo and Albert representing Mexico, Allen and Eva representing Kenya and many others.
The actual conference started the following day, and that is when things started going pretty rough for the following three days. We almost teamed up against other delegates immediately, and others same, there was 9 countries represented by 18 delegates with 2 for each countries, there was 2 team formed up with 4 for each team and 1 as a bystander. We argued and debated over literally every aspect and detail of the subject with saliva enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool. Neither of our teams moved an inch of ground. But throughout this raging war, our team formed great comradeship unifying us against a single enemy. The three days were pretty much a ritual of arguing, questioning each other, and so on. Even the voting procedure where we had to vote for the resolution for this problem was pretty expected; 4 against 4 for and 1 did not vote. Which was pretty unsurprising.
When the meeting was over, our group gathered, we conversed and laughed at jokes of our uselessness of our discussion and arguments, I sighed, but soon smiled, because although I had wasted saliva and brainpower for the arguments, I had earned something so much better, something that will remain as a gem in the center of my heart.
